The Data About How Our Patients Feel

Hi Reader,

Emotions....we all have them, right?

If you've ever wondered what the data says about the emotions that parents and kids with food allergy experience, and what some of the psychosocial research is focusing on in order to address these big emotions, then my conversation with psychologist Lisa Lombard, PhD. and allergist Dr. Ruchi Gupta will interest you!

In the podcast episode titled "The Data About Our Feelings", here are some of the topics we explored:

  • What the most common emotions were for parents/caregivers versus food allergic kids
  • The most surprising emotion experienced by caregivers and individuals with food allergies
  • How the level of fear and anxiety vary across different age groups of children with food allergies
  • How food allergies impact social and emotional health, as well as overall quality of life
  • What 71% of survey respondents expressed interest in to help them manage life with food allergy
  • What methods of psychosocial support and services respondents expressed most comfort with
  • What kinds of skills caregivers and individuals with food allergies felt might be useful to learn
  • The most common question parents get about their child's food allergy when others are caring for the child
  • How allergy-informed behavioral health care providers can play a role in food allergy patient care

While this study has concluded, The Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research (CFAAR) continues to study crucial topics focused on living with food allergies, including but not limited to:

  • improving FA preparedness on college campuses
  • FA management in low income youth
  • quality of life assessment among FA immunotherapy participants

Hi Reader, With October comes Halloween - and a flurry of thoughts swirling around in the minds' of parents of kids with food allergies. "How should we approach Trick-or-Treating?" "Should I even let my child Trick-or-Treat?" "If we do, how do we balance safety and fun?" The truth is, the answers to these questions come from a shared decision-making process between parents, their child, and sometimes even the allergist. (I highly encourage you to call your healthcare team to ask safety...
